چکیده

background: the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of three chewing gums and paraffi n on the remineralization and the hardness of demineralized enamel. materials and methods: a total of 12 subjects wore intraoral palatal appliances with two demineralized bovine enamel slabs. the study consisted of four experimental periods each lasting 21-days, during which subjects were assigned to one of three gum-chewing regimens: gum containing sorbitol, xylitol and a mixture of sorbitol and xylitol and with paraffi n as control. the appliances were worn during gum-chewing for 20 min and then retained for 20 min 4 times/ day. the slabs were subjected to energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analysis and surface microhardness measurements before in setting into the appliance and after the experimental period. the data were subjected to analysis of variance for repeated measures. a p < 0.05 was considered statistically signifi cant. results: mineral analysis revealed no signifi cant difference between the baseline and after chewing periods for all groups (p > 0.05). no signifi cant difference was found among the groups either for the baseline measurements or after chewing periods (p > 0.05). all groups showed higher microhardness values after the chewing periods than the baseline except for the vivident xylit group (p < 0.05). conclusion: the chewing of gum had no effect on the ca/p ratio of demineralized enamel surfaces. the hardening of the demineralized enamel surfaces may vary according to the type of chewing gum. key words: chewing gum, enamel, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, microhardness

Remineralization effects of xylitol on demineralized enamel.

We morphologically determined the effects of xylitol on the remineralization of artificially demineralized enamel. The samples were demineralized and then immersed in a remineralizing solution with or without 20% xylitol at 37 degrees C for 2 weeks. Samples were observed using contact microradiography, a multipurpose image processor (MIP) and a high-resolution electron microscope (HRTEM). Conta...

Dose response of xylitol and sorbitol for EPR retrospective dosimetry with applications to chewing gum.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the radiation-induced electron paramagnetic resonance signal in sweeteners xylitol and sorbitol for use in retrospective dosimetry. For both sweeteners and chewing gum, the signal changed at an interval of 1-84 d after irradiation with minimal changes after 4-8 d. A dependence on storage conditions was noticed and the exposure of the samples to lig...

Effect of xylitol on growth of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the presence of fructose and sorbitol.

Xylitol is effective in preventing acute otitis media by inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus pneumoniae. To clarify this inhibition we used fructose, which is known to block similar growth inhibition observed in Streptococcus mutans. In addition, we evaluated the efficacy of sorbitol in inhibiting the growth of pneumococci, as sorbitol is widely used for indications similar to those for whic...

The effect of different chewing gum on pH of Dental Plaque

Objective: Although the most useful method to reduce mechanical dental plaque is brushing and flossing, but due to the lack of adequate effectiveness achieved by these methods, the use of other methods such as replacing sweeteners, including Xylitol and Sorbitol with sucrose in products such as chewing gums have come into the focus of attention. This research was done aimed at examine the eff...

Stimulating effect of sorbitol and xylitol on germination and growth of some xerophilic fungi.

Sorbitol and xylitol are polyols often used in foods as naturally occurring sugar substitutes. They provide sweet taste and reduced calories in products of intermediate moisture. This type of food is susceptible to spoilage by xerophilic molds which affect shelf life of foods and produce significant losses. The aim of the present work was to study the effect of glycerol, sorbitol and xylitol on...
